A quick glance at this page will give you a hint that I spend a lot of time on nico nico. I’ll be entirely honest, I don’t really remember
what I did before march ’07 anymore.

I’m just going to go over the basics of using nico and it’s interface, as well as something really important – etiquette.
There, etiquette over.

Let’s go over the very basics for the absolute noob.

The site URL is You can learn how to make an account over here.
Also check Akira’s section for guides on neta terms if you have trouble understanding anything. Or just find a 2ch neta guide somewhere.

What is Nico Nico Douga? It’s a video site with very nice video/audio quality, and a strong community feeling. It’s currently the 7th
biggest website in Japan, only outranked by ISP pages, youtube, and mixi. Youtube takes all the tards – nico nico douga takes just
about every worthwhile post on youtube.

Anyways… once you’re all signed up and able to view videos, it might be a bit confusing at first. Here’s a quick guide to the general interface:

  1. Date & Time the video was added.
  2. Title of the video. The [get flv] is a greasemonkey script, google will help you find it.
  3. This is the description of the video. Often includes encoding information, links to relevant videos, and such.
  4. Tags… tagging system works like danbooru (note: the japanese aren’t very good at tagging, it’s more of a joke a lot of the time… but it can be really funny)
  5. Buttons for saving the video… personally I think browser bookmarks work better though.
  6. Links to the video and blog integration (like what you see on uruchai all the time)
  7. The top is the number of views, the bottom is the number of comments.
  8. The video itself. The text scrolling across videos is comments – more on that later. The controls should be obvious.
  9. Comments in list form… click on one and it will take you to the time the comment is said.
  10. “Command:” with this you can control your comments – color, size, position, etc. I’ll go indepth regarding this later.
  11. Comment box. Enter text, and it will show up on the video, timed to when you hit enter. Again, more on this later…
  12. The top box is repeat/loop video. The bottom box disables comments.
  13. Links to related stuff on Amazon. Users with premium accounts can choose amazon items to show up on the page.

Regarding comments:
And DON’T COMMENT IN ENGLISH. Can’t stress that enough.
*Ahem*. So now you’re probably wondering more about the comment system. Nico has “live” scrolling comments – place a comment on the video and it will line up with where you timed it. People do awesome things with comments – from AA that “interacts” with the video, to AA timed and spaced so well that it appears 3D and even does a spin on the video – to funny subtitles – to useful information and relevant links – to subtitles for songs – and working together to create some of the most high volume VIP-Quality spam available on the internet.

Here’s a couple of examples, just for the hell of it:

Alice is always getting turned into a card or mahjong piece…

Was there supposed to be a video back there?

Anyways, I am too lazy to find more examples – people putting platforms under megaman when he jumps, etc…
Oh, and watching anime on nico is always lol.

Now concerning the commands. If you’re lucky enough to know enough japanese to comment without sounding like a dumbass, the command box is your friend. There are videos uploaded as junk to test commands and AA on before going live on real videos. You can find these under コマンドテスト in the test tag. Some commands are listed here.
Some videos and memes demand a certain form for comments.
All 真赤な誓い comments should be “big red”.
All おまいGONZO comments should be “cyan”.
You’ll pick up more as you go.

A good test video is here:

There’s no real tricks to nico AA. It’s all done with good timing and spacing.

Anyways, now that you know all the basics and a bit more, run around the site a bit! If you don’t know any japanese, nico still has a lot of interesting videos. You can check out the all time ranking to find some interesting videos. I might cover what a few of them are in the future, but I suppose there isn’t too much of a reason for that.

Tip: you can easily find japanese names for game and anime series on wikipedia or google. Don’t shy away just because you can’t search properly! Nico’s video and audio quality is highly superior to Youtube (but what isn’t?).

That’s enough for now.

    Gacktshly Says:

Would you know how to edit your own video title on Nico Nico? I uploaded a video, but the title wouldn’t accept “&” in it, so it looks kind of funny. I only want to delete the “&” symbol from my title, not change the video in any way.
