Next up: Sunshine Creation 37

First up on the list of conventions to hit this year is Sunshine Creation, known as SunCri (サンクリ) for short. This mid-sized convention is held every three to four months (barring some major event, such as Comiket) in the World Import Mart’s Cultural Hall in the gigantic Sunshine City shopping complex in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

A small army of otaku waits for the doors to open for Sunshine Creation 34 at Sunshine City’s World Import Mart

This event runs from 11am to 3:30pm and features some well-known doujin circles such as Akane Makes Revolution and Indico Lite, and a gaggle of lesser known (but equally promising) circles whose reputations have not yet been established overseas. The crowd is largish but nowhere near the size of Comiket, and lines are either nonexistent or manageable (most lines – if they manage to form – are 5 minutes long, with some of the big name artists drawing lines up to an hour long). But for the most part, some real doujin treasures can be gotten here without the frenetic bustle and gigantic lines of Comiket.

The sheer mass of people certainly places SunCri in the ranks of the major cons, making it a good place to start the con-going experience – it has the quality and variety without the legwork. The catalog (worth buying simply for the cover illustrations) is sold in most doujin stores prior to the event and contains map and circle information for planning. Unfortunately, as far as I know there is no CD version of the catalog so the prework can be forbidding, but it is a good con to start with even if you have no clue what you want because the crowd is small enough that you can simply browse the tables without worrying about being swept away (a la Tsukasa at Comiket).

This season’s Sunshine Creation is scheduled to take place on October 8th, just a few days after I arrive in Japan. Look forward to the report on it.
